HCSF is thrilled to announce that $70,000 in grants were awarded this fall, thanks to the generosity of our community.

Edgewood Elementary

Talking Books!

Angela Gerontakis

This grant will provide audio books in book form for 3rd-5th grade reluctant readers or readers who struggle with print. The goal is to engage students to build their vocabulary, comprehension, reading capacity and love for reading.

Auburn University Raptor Center Presentation

Margaret Ann Walker

The Auburn University Raptor Center will visit 1st and 5th grade students to hear a presentation based on our science course of study. The presentation team will bring seven raptors, including one of the two Auburn University Eagles.

Sensory Inclusive Edgewood

Meg Feltham

This grant will provide sensory inclusion bags throughout the school, including noise canceling headphones and sensory fidgets, to support students as needs arise. 

Kendore Multisensory Bundle for Reading

Shelly Stallings

Kendore multisensory bundles in the forms of sand, beads, and gel boards will provide kindergarten students with the confidence and ownership of their own learning to succeed as they grow in their reading abilities. 

Adapted Switch Book Kits 

Stephanie Lorberbaum

Switch book kits using adaptive toys, books, and voice output devices will help students with limited communication skills participate in literacy based instruction.

An Extraordinary Girls Club

This program will provide a place for girls of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds to gather after school and gain guidance and inspiration from others.

Fun and engaging math activities that motivate even the most reluctant learners.

Sing, Read, and Play to Help Us Write – Animal Habitats

Research materials and multisensory learning activities to enrich the kindergarten unit on animals and their habitats.

This extension will provide a full library of daily lessons, digital lesson plans for every level, assessments and reporting, and a complete library of decodable e-books for preschool students.

This grant will cover supplies for students with sensory needs so that they can function at optimal learning capacity.

Homewood Middle School

Cardio Drumming

This grant will provide cardio drumming equipment to engage students and maximize participation in physical education classes at HMS and elementary schools.

HMS Clubs

This grant will allow co-curricular club sponsors to provide materials for more than ten new clubs.

Edulastic for the Win!

This premium teacher membership will allow science teachers to monitor student progress toward mastery and provide appropriate support through weekly assessment.

Eighth Grade Science Feels the Need for Speed

This grant will enhance the physics curriculum with Smart Timer photogate systems to be used in labs that support student mastery of ALCOS standards.

The Sound of Music Technology

This grant will cover a digital music making program for the new music technology class.

FACS Equipment

This grant will enhance the FACS program with new equipment for each kitchen laboratory, including microwaves, stand mixers and a large heat press.

Outdoor Classroom Pavilion

This grant will help fund the addition of an outdoor classroom/pavilion in the HCS community gardens.

2023 ACTM Conference

Tracy Colley

Three HMS math teachers will attend the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference to stay current with research and teaching practices for mathematics.

Teachers are Learners Too!

Shelby DiLorenzo

The eighth grade science team will attend the National Science Teacher Association Conference. Knowledge from this premier professional learning event for science teachers will be shared with other teachers in the district.

Homewood High School

Stock Market Game for HHS Seniors

Andie Freedman

This grant will cover team fees for students to compete in the With funds for items such as a cash register, shirt folding board, size labeling indicators, and shelving, this grant will allow special education students to gain important vocational skills. A mock store will also be established for students to practice these skills.

Art Room Mural

Carolyn Coker

This grant will enable art students to collaborate, create, and complete a mural with a local professional muralist. Funds will be used to compensate the muralist and to purchase supplies to create the mural on the art room wall.

AP English Literature – It’s Lit!

This grant will be used to purchase relevant contemporary fiction titles for the AP English Literature classroom library, with the goal of implementing student choice and voice in the curriculum.

Patriot Pride

This grant will help frame historical U.S. flags for display, along with documentation as to the historical significance of each version.

English for Everyone: Online Interactive Activities & Microphone Headphones

Emma Black and Claudia Sale Casalino

This grant will provide English for Everyone Online Interactive Activities and a class set of microphone headsets for English Language Learners.

What’s in your Pocket?

Clayton Sweeney and Elizabeth Anne McGowin

This grant will provide individual pocket Constitutions for seniors to use in U.S. Government and Economics. These will be used as guides for topics such as the Bill of Rights and will help students become engaged, contributing, and responsible citizens.
